Vice President, Inclusion and Community Engagement and Deputy CEO

Mischelle vanThiel brings more than 20 years of leadership experience, including creating, coaching and leading record-breaking fundraising teams, building powerful community, corporate and government partnerships, and engaging diverse stakeholders, staff and volunteer groups. Mischelle has deep roots in the community and a proven record of success in building strategic relationships.

In the newly created role of Vice President, Advancement, Mischelle is a responsible for museum’s philanthropy, marketing and public relations divisions.

Before joining the Royal BC Museum, Mischelle’s extensive experience included positions as the CEO of the Victoria Hospice, where she oversaw four consecutive years of record-breaking fundraising results; a joint appointment at Alberta Health Services and the University of Calgary as the Regional Manager of Psychiatry and Mental Health and Specialty Medicine; and Associate Faculty and Academic Project Advisor in the Faculty of Business at Royal Roads University. Mischelle has also held senior leadership positions in post-secondary education, publishing, and banking and runs her own successful small business consulting firm.


Mischelle completed her MBA (Entrepreneurship) from the University of Victoria, where she also received her BA (Art History and Museum Studies). Additionally, she is a Certified Financial Planner and holds a Human Resources Management Diploma.
