Cindy Van Volsem earned a master of arts degree in Jerusalem studying historical geography, archaeology and Hebrew. Learning in that context how material culture informs history compelled her to pursue a museum career. After 21 years of work as a collections manager and curator she came to the Royal BC Museum to work in exhibitions, having returned to college in 2010 to retrain as a joiner/cabinetmaker.
